Thralls (and pets) will go to the last "guard"-position eventually. So if you ordered them to guard, before you died, this is considered the "home" for them. I can only speak for singleplayer, but I think they just technically teleport to the last guard-position.And you’re lucky they even work at all at this point. I thought I tried them ALL T4 crafters and thought none of them worked BUT I've read here moments ago that with QoL improvements they did, thralls now don't automatically go in the appropriate spot when you send them in the benches inventory.
