Marlin serial numbers search

May 16, 2014 · Gander mountain has one for sale and I asked for the serial number and it starts with MR 125XXD. The stamp has REP which I know is Remington but I thought Remington bought Marlin in 2010. I cant find a straight answer completely but from doing the 100 minus method it says the gun was manufactured in 1988. Can anyone help me out on this.

The current variation gold trigger lever-action .22 Caliber Golden 39A is produced by the Marlin Firearms Co. of New Haven, Connecticut. The Golden 39A was last constructed in Remington’s Marlin factory in Ilion, NY., When Marlin developed this serial number system, they used the current year, subtracted from 100 to determine year of manufacture. (i.e. 100 - 02 = 98 or 1998 or 100 - 03 = 97 or 1997) This was done because from 1969 to 1972, Marlin used the the last two digits of the year as the serial number prefix., Parley, except for the few Marlin-Rockwell marked Model 39's they all have Corporation marked barrels. (reference page 272 of Brophy's book, last paragraph) Jwmtx: Model 39's made between 1921 and 1925 had no serial number prefix. Model 39's made between 1926 to 1932 has the "S" prefix. The rest of the Model 39 had the "HS" serial number prefix.
